Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) a Medical French Non governmental organisation that has been operating in Cameroon for over 30 years now is reportedly being accused by the government of Cameroon for partiality in thier operations in the crisis hit North region and the North West and South West regions of Cameroon, an allegation the NGO has denied.
Dr Modeste Tamakloe Koku, Head of Mission of the Organisation in Cameroon was in an audience with Cameroonian authorities on Monday August 31st, 2020 alledgedly to answer to the accusations.
Doctors Without Borders confirms that we participated in a meeting with members of the Cameroonian government on Monday, during which we had the opportunity to remind them of our principles of action” a statement from DWB reads.
During the meeting, the Ministers of External Relations and Territorial Administration reportedly asked the DWB head to urge his members to be more neutral and impartial during their interventions in the three troubled regions of the country; Far North, North West and South West regions.
The NGO has however reiterated that thier primary objective every where they operate is to provide medical assistance to people requiring emergency medical care, regardless of nationality, religion or political affiliation.
We do not take sides, we do not collude: we simply go where needs are greatest to help vulnerable populations in need”, DWB adds noting that they are “an independent, neutral and impartial medical organization working in dozens of countries affected by violence and conflict. Medical ethics and humanitarian principles are at the heart of our action. We do not take sides, we do not collude: we simply go where needs are greatest to help vulnerable populations in need”.
They have however acknowledged that thier teams are in contact with the authorities, communities and leaders in the regions where they have projects to ensure that they are able to support healthcare facilities, reach populations in need and provide impartial, free medical assistance.
“We do not have any links with any of the parties in the violence beyond those necessary to carry out exclusively our humanitarian and medical activities and we do not facilitate their hosting or transportation” DWB adds.
It is not the first time Doctors Without Borders have been accused of Impartiality and collusion with terrorists in the North regionband separatists in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon but each time the organization has reiterated thier principles of Impartiality and neutrality.
The medical NGO is currently running a couple of projects in the crisis hit regions to help those who have been affected.
